Source Environment Requirements

This covers the machine where EdbMails itself is installed and run, and the OST file(s) it will read.

Where to Install

Install EdbMails on any Windows machine for offline OST recovery and migration. EdbMails does not need to be installed on the same machine that holds the OST file.

You can access the OST file over a network by sharing it — read and write access to the file share is required.
Any client workstation with connectivity to the target server can be used.

Supported Operating Systems

Ensure the latest updates are installed on your operating system. Supports both 32-bit and 64-bit machines.

Hardware Requirements

Minimum recommended: a quad-core CPU with at least 4 GB of RAM.

Disk Space Requirements

Installing additional components (such as the .NET Framework) requires approximately 100 MB of available disk space.
EdbMails does not store the data being migrated at any temporary location on the local disk.
Metadata used for incremental checks is kept to the minimal size required.

Internet Connection

An internet connection is required only to authenticate login credentials and verify available/used mailbox licenses — and additionally when migrating Office 365 mailbox data. It is not required for offline OST scanning and recovery itself.

Outlook Requirement (For PST Export)

To export recovered OST data to PST format, Microsoft Outlook must be installed: Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, or 2007. A configured Outlook profile is needed to complete the export and to open/verify the resulting PST file.

This requirement applies specifically to PST export. It does not apply when migrating directly to Office 365 or Exchange Server (see Target Server Requirements below), where no Outlook installation is needed.

Target Server Requirements

This covers the destination server or service when migrating recovered mailbox data, rather than just exporting to a local PST.

Migration is supported to any version of Exchange Server starting from Exchange 2007:

To export to Office 365 or to Exchange server, no Outlook installation is required. This is a separate, narrower requirement than the PST-export Outlook requirement above — export-to-PST and migrate-to-server are different operations with different prerequisites.

Admin Account Rights (Office 365 / Exchange Targets)

Appropriate Office 365 account credentials must be provided for the connection.
The account must be mailbox-enabled (an Office 365 license assigned).
A UPN address must be configured.

The following roles must be assigned to the admin account:

Application Impersonation
View-Only Recipients
View-Only Configuration
User Management Administrator / Global Administrator
For public folder migration, public folder permissions must also be assigned to the required user.

Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0) Is Supported

EdbMails supports Microsoft 365 modern authentication via OAuth 2.0 for target Office 365 connections, with both automatic app registration (sign in with a Global Admin account) and manual registration options. This matters because Microsoft has been phasing out Basic Authentication for Exchange Online — a tool that only supported the old method would no longer be usable for Office 365 targets at all.
