Understanding the upgrade process and version changes
Updating your EdbMails Office 365 migration software with the latest version will allow you to have access to the latest features, developments, and security fixes. Here is an easy guide for knowing version numbers and how to update safely.
Understanding version numbers
The current version of the application is displayed at the very top of the main EdbMails window. Application versions take the format:
Example: 6.1.0.34 → [major].[minor].[maintenance].[build]
What each number represents:
- Major: the first number represents a major update to software where major changes are introduced; these are infrequent but a significant enhancement.
- Minor: The second number moves up with planned releases that bring new features or enhancements. See the release notes for what changed.
- Maintenance: The third number changes when an unplanned fix goes out — usually an urgent bug or issue that can't wait for the next minor release.
- Build: The fourth number covers smaller updates — bug fixes, UI tweaks, security patches, and performance improvements.
Once you know what each number stands for, tracking updates becomes straightforward — you'll know right away what kind of changes a new version brings.
How to upgrade EdbMails
- Download the latest installer from the official EdbMails download page.
- Run the installed setup on the machine on which EdbMails has already been installed.
- The currently installed EdbMails software will be closed automatically when the setup is run. If you were working on some migrations, they will be paused, and you have to restart the migrations by hand after updating.
- Follow the steps again on other machines, on which EdbMails is installed in your organization.
- Start the new version of the EdbMails software. All your settings will still be saved, but ongoing migrations must be manually resumed.
